FINE ART MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHY
"I am a chameleon and a social scientist. I love rock and roll music. I play guitar badly and extremely enthusiastically. I have a knack for hanging out with musicians and discovering some inner truth. I graduated from Swarthmore College in 1988 with a degree in Sociology and nary a clue as to what to do with myself. I was saved from a life of drudgery (or at least an actual job) by an offer to do photography for hometown buddies the Dave Matthews Band before they signed their record deal. My career has been a joyous, topsy-turvy ride ever since. I work with musicians of virtually any genre of music so long as there is some level on which I can relate to the artist and their tunes. Check out my credit list and you will see rock, country, hip-hop and all kinds of acts that fall in between the cracks of these overly didactic classifications. This is where the social scientist in me comes to life, watching, listening and rendering with a critical but loving eye. I don't know what else to say, except that I try to count my lucky stars everyday and kiss my wife and my two little girls every night."

The Morrison Hotel Presents:
STILL MOVING: My Morning Jacket by Sam Erickson
featuring 21 of Erickson’s Iconic, Career-Spanning Images of the Band.
May 22 through June 17, 2009
Morrison Hotel Gallery
313 Bowery
NYC
From 2002 to 2008 photographer and filmmaker Sam Erickson regularly documented My Morning Jacket as they steadily grew into one of the most acclaimed and influential bands of their generation. His efforts resulted in a stunning collection of images from the recording of the band’s last three studio albums: It Still Moves, Z, and Evil Urges, numerous live shots and the making of their CD/DVD Okonokos.
Beginning on May 22nd, the Morrison Hotel Gallery will show 21 of these images for a six-week exhibition. These will be hand-printed, archival shots from the film negatives, and will be available in limited editions. None of the images in the show were commissioned photographs; the majority have never before been viewed by the public. This also marks the first instance the Morrison Hotel Gallery has done a show on a band that is ascending, rather than reflecting on a career.
Erickson was able to spend enough time with My Morning Jacket to build a rapport that allowed him to both chronicle their evolution and shed some light on the elusive group. One can see Erickson’s intuitive grasp on how the band functions as a well as a clear understanding of their visual aesthetic. His many candid shots accomplish the difficult task of capturing the essence that ties together five individuals both on and off the stage.
“Sam is one of the new emerging talents in the music visual media arena. I was impressed with his technical and artistic ability as a photographer. Combined that with Sam’s ability to capture the very talented and critically acclaimed band, My Morning Jacket from early on in their career to present. That appealed to me and I anticipate will appeal to our audience”
