Idols, A Web-Exclusive World Tour

Idols, A Web-Exclusive World Tour

From gallery walls to the Great Wall of China, Morrison Hotel Gallery invites you to hit the road with Idols, a web-exclusive world tour spanning seven continents and more than a half-century of iconic imagery. Playing on portrait tradition, conventional sites of exhibition and the pangs of wanderlust presently felt worldwide, Idols reframes the exemplary works of internationally-acclaimed photographers such as Terry O'Neill, Peter Hujar, Lynn Goldsmith, Bob Gruen and Timothy White through irreverent virtual renderings at the intersection of kitsch and hallmarks of human expression. Like uncanny postcards of iconic worlds colliding, Idols ushers in a new age of virtual expression and MHG experiences as this fine art activation makes its way to MorrisonHotelGallery.com on Wednesday, May 6, 2020.

Follow along both here and at @IdolsWorldTour on Instagram as we explore, in real-time, what it means to take these epochal works of modern portraiture beyond their Morrison Hotel Gallery home and out in the "real" world at large, situating iconic imagery in cross-contextual dialogue with billboards, megaliths and masterpieces.

Mona Lisa's uncanny expression has perplexed spectators for centuries, making her one of the most famous muses in all of art history and one of the most Instagrammed with over 1.5M posts tagged #monalisa. Picking up where the likes of da Vinci and Warhol left off, photographer Timothy White (@timothywhite) conjures a similar nonsensicality in his contemporaneous incarnation of archetypical tabloid superstar Elizabeth Taylor. β€” Browse 𝙄𝙙𝙀𝙑𝙨, 𝘼 π™’π™šπ™—-π™€π™π™˜π™‘π™ͺπ™¨π™žπ™«π™š 𝙒𝙀𝙧𝙑𝙙 𝙏𝙀π™ͺ𝙧 at the link in bio. #morrisonhotegallery

Consecrated in 1483, the Sistine Chapel is the Vatican City’s crown jewel. As many who have visited the papal epicenter of the world will attest, its fresco ceiling is a masterpiece divine intervention which took Michelangelo over just four years to complete under the patronage of Pope Julius II. Meanwhile, photographer Michael Joseph's Beggars Banquet (1968) session also lends itself to plenty of time-honored devotees. With its storied intricacies and proto-Baroque composition, it's little wonder as to why this is among the rarest and most coveted pieces within the Morrison Hotel Gallery collection. Given the opportunity, we could probably stand before this sprawling masterwork for hours but alas, "No sympathy for the devil" as the web-exclusive world tour presses on to an altogether different site of pilgrimage, praise and creative expression. As the desert turned indulgent oasis of star-studded residencies and unapologetic kitsch remains at a standstill, we pine for a return to the kind of high-rolling, sharp-suited indulgence that would do forebearers like Sammy Davis, Jr. and the Rat Pack justice. As stay-at-home orders and dress-down codes persist, "lets fly, let's fly away" as we go all in on Idols, the web-exclusive world tour presented by Morrison Hotel Gallery. From the birth of disco, FLUXUS, and Morrison Hotel Gallery's brick-and-mortar flagship nestled in the heart of the historic district at 116 Prince St. to the reclusive hideouts of luminaries like Andy Warhol, Joseph Beuys, John Lennon (@johnlennonofficial), Grace Jones and countless others, SoHo has been an iron-clad hotbed of creative expression for the better part of a century. Though the neighborhood's glory days of glitter and grit can still be seen in subtle ways, the time-honored photography of Bob Gruen (@bob_gruen) transports onlookers to a New York City of popular imagining and prolific artistry. Tune in to @morrisonhotelgallery Instagram Live later today (2pm PDT/5pm EDT) when the legendary photographer opens his home and widely-storied oeuvre to Behind The Lens, Episode 15. As countercultural charms and tropes of downtown Manhattan fade in the rear-view mirror of an uptown-bound gypsy cab, the web-exclusive world tour continues to The Metropolitan Museum of Art (@metmuseum), where art world academia has converged since 1880 with the philanthropic premise of establishing an American epicenter for the cultivation of public art experiences. Under different circumstances, we'd be among the masses eager to get a peek at how Met Costume Institute (@metcostumeinstitute) curators might've envisioned this year's theme, "About Time: Fashion and Duration"; but alas, with fashion galas, tours and art openings on indefinite pause, we embrace stay-at-home orders, sweat-pant comforts and take matters into our own hands with a plethora of idols whose cross-canonical contributions to the world of art transcend time and genre. Manhattan's SoHo namesake may short for "south of Houston" but venture 3,500 miles east and you'll find another Soho. Giving rise to some of the world's first rock clubs (The 2i's, The Marquee Club, Ronnie Scott's), the London district's reputation as one of the preeminent music capitals of the world is continued a century onwards with local institutions like Jazz After Dark which has played host some of the earliest performances of beloved contemporaries like Amy Winehouse (@amywinehouse) who considered legendary dive one of her favorite haunts. The hallowed halls of Buckingham Palace have played host to rich histories including a different creed of royalty altogether with the knighthood of such idols as Mick Jagger, Elton John, Shirley Bassey and Paul McCartney among others. These days, however, England's monarchy (@theroyalfamily) appears to be marching on into a modern age of its own and we think it's high time that the Westminster residence, which has remained much the same since its construction in 1703, follow in suit. Decades prior to the omnipotent age of Instagram and Spotify, West Hollywood's Sunset Strip gave revolutionary rise to music iconography with billboards geared towards piquing the interest of industry execs and disc jockeys who traipsed to-and-fro music halls and radio stations by way of the historic motorway. Though The Doors might've pioneered the clever publicity ploy in 1967 by taking out an ad in promotion of the band's eponymously-titled breakthrough album, countless more now-iconic images would come to line the Strip like sprawling calling cards. These days, those featured here and many others have a new home just around the corner at Morrison Hotel Gallery's Sunset Marquis outpost. Conjuring visions of "Seven Wonders" and "Silver Springs" is the third stop on today's 𝙄𝙙𝙀𝙑𝙨 world tour. More than the sum of travertine stone or pocket change wishes, the ethereal beauty beheld by Rome's Fontana di Trevi, or Trevi Fountain, lies within its rich history. Though architect Nicola Salvi would not live to see its completion in 1743, the swan song remains an architectural feat of bewitching β€œDreams.” Stay tuned for more legendary locales. It seems like only yesterday that Morrison Hotel Gallery (@morrisonhotelgallery) touched down at Buckingham Palace (@buckinghampalaceshop), bringing a pop of punk to the antiquated institution with Idols. Today, however, the web-exclusive world tour makes its return with new additions courtesy of the king of guitar and queen of soul as see through the respective lenses of David Montgomery (@davidmontgomerystudio) and Timothy White (@timothywhite) .
