Opening to the public on September 18th, 2019 at Newark Museum are two new exhibitions of compellingly divergent intrigue. While the 50+ ethnographic artifacts to be included within Beyond Zen: Japanese Buddhism Revealed are sure to offer poignant insight on a life of pious simplicity, it's no secret that What Exit? The Spirit of New Jersey: Photographs By Timothy White hits a little closer to home. Shining a spotlight on the secular iconography of celebrity culture through the lens of our very own Timothy White ahead of next month's New Jersey Hall of Fame induction ceremony where the famed photographer and NJ native will be honored in the esteemed category of 'Arts & Letters', this highly-anticipated exhibition is shaping up to be a homecoming in more ways than one.
Sixteen years since his Newark Museum solo debut in 2003 with Timothy White: Image Maker, a mid-career retrospective casting a wide net of celebrity subjects including the likes of Aretha Franklin, Lil' Kim and Ray Charles among others, the Fort Lee raised photographer's sophomore return comes with a twist. At the bequest of museum director Linda C. Harrison, White hones in on the larger-than-life likenesses of homegrown talent. Though the trajectories amongst such stars as Bruce Springsteen, Whoopi Goldberg, Queen Latifah, Jack Nicholson, Jon Bon Jovi, Whitney Houston and Ice-T may vary greatly, What Exit? comes full circle not only before lens of Timothy White but moreover behind, finding greater common ground in New Jersey origin stories. On view now through January 5th, 2020, What Exit? The Spirit of New Jersey: Photographs By Timothy White is not to be missed or easily forgotten.
