Silver Screen | Opening Thursday, October 8, 2020

LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION. When, in Sunset Boulevard, Gloria Swanson laments, "We had faces! They don't have faces like that any more," she might as well have been paying tribute to those working behind the camera to help define legendary faces through discernible plays of light and shade. Between binge-watching old favorites and tuning in to livestream programming from Morrison Hotel Gallery, we're seeing those time-honored faces more than usual as Hitchcock's Rear Window feels altogether too close for comfort during these unprecedented times.

Seventy years later, Silver Screen (on view starting Thursday, October 8, 2020) is a rediscovery of those iconic faces, photographs and photographers, disrupting the once-fixed orbits of Hollywood's brightest stars in revisionary context with both classic imagery and previously-unseen works from Morrison Hotel Gallery's Condé Nast Collection taking centerstage. From grandiose portraits embodying the gilded age of Hollywood to candid snapshots of the mere mortal actors that may otherwise be stand-ins for screen deities, this exhibition explores the dualistic and enduring pastime of cinematographic magic at the dawning of the film industry's newest, true digital dawn.

Featured Photographers: Sid Avery, Jake Chessum, Barry Feinstein, Milton H. Greene, John R. Hamilton, Jim Herrington, Don Hunstein, Peter Martin, Floyd McCarty, Terry O'Neill, Ken Regan, Al Satterwhite, Norman Seeff, Art Shay, Eric Skipsey, Allan Tannenbaum and Timothy White

In anticipation, Morrison Hotel Gallery sets the stage with an exhibition-accompanying soundtrack of 40+ evergreen hits that have come to life on the big screen over the past century...
