Monterey Pop Photography

Monterey Pop was a 3-day Summer of Love Festival held at the Monterey County Fairgrounds in California. It was created by John Phillips (of The Mamas and The Papas), Lou Adler, Alan Pariser, and Derek Taylor, with official photographer D A Pennebaker; who later created the documentary Monterey Pop. It was an introduction to many bands and artists including Big Brother and the Holding Company with Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, Ravi Shankar, and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. The Monterey Pop festival was put together in seven weeks with the intention of validating Rock music as art as much as Folk and Jazz at the time. It was a success, with the event being marked as inspiration for future festivals to come, including Woodstock, just two years later. The song "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)", was written by John Phillips to promote the event.
