Sunshine Pop

Comprised largely of imitators and inspired offshoots of better-known frontrunners like the Mamas & the Papas, the 5th Dimension and (sometimes) the Beach Boys, the 1960s Southern Californian subgenre of sunshine pop gave rise to a free-loving league of lyrical savants with sage advice set to simple chord progressions. Rooted in soft psych proclivities of easy listening and an earnest appreciation for the human experience, the cult acclaim bolstered by such acts as The Turtles, Harpers Bizarre, Love, Donovan, The Lovin' Spoonful, Sweetwater and The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band would speak to the timely demands of Escapist ideology and an Aquarian age of magic gardens, paisley skies and existential positivity, going on to find a brush with Top 40 recognition in the months leading up to the mythic Summer of Love. A half-century onward, what could be more refreshing? Borrowing inspiration from these fringe forebearers, join us in lighting something strong (candle, incense or otherwise) and unwind as we immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds and psychosomatic sensations of sunshine pop with this gallery-curated playlist and collection of archival images available for purchase exclusively through Morrison Hotel Gallery as fine art prints.
