Electric Lady Studios

Completed just three weeks before his untimely passing, Jimi Hendrix's Electric Lady Studios opened 50 years ago today on August 26, 1970, providing countless contemporaries with what is arguably the guitar pioneer's most lasting contribution to music culture at large. The first of its kind, the artist-owned recording studio built on De Stijl brick aestheticism and the idea of giving burgeoning talent an affordable space to create, collaborate and coalesce has played historic host to the recordings of classic such as "Fame" (David Bowie), “Eat to the Beat" (Blondie), “Fulfillingness’ First Finale" (Stevie Wonder), “Tougher Than Leather" (Run DMC), “Houses of the Holy" (Led Zeppelin) and even AC/DC’s 'Back in Black', the best selling hard rock album of all-time. To commemorate its half-centennial, Morrison Hotel Gallery presents a collection of images from the MHG archives paying homage to Hendrix and an A-to-Z of celebrated recording artists spanning the gamut from Alice Cooper and Beyoncé to Yoko Ono and Frank Zappa united by (if for no other reason than) Electric Lady sessions which contribute to the enduring legacy of this time-honored institution at 52 W 8th St.
