Lena Horne in Photographs 1948, 1950 - Singer, Dancer, Activist

In the first two photographs in this Lena Horne print collection taken by the legendary photographer Herman Leonard, the mood was somber at the time she tells Leonard the story of how she was not allowed to sit at the club table after her performance because of the discriminating policies practiced by the club in the late 1940s. In 1948 Leonard took these gorgeous photographs, developed them the next day and delivered them to Horne who was delighted with his work. He went on to photograph her again in 1950 as seen again in the third photo in this collection, the upbeat mood that shows her performing at the mic and that million dollar smile!

Horne's 70 year career included appearances on film, television and theater career. During the late 1940s when the fear of Communism in the U.S.A lead to accusations and blacklisting of citizens including many in Hollywood, Horne was blacklisted. She appeared in the 1943 films Cabin in the Sky and Stormy Weather. Browse our fine art Lena Horne photographs below.
