1940s Photography

The 1940s brought us film classics like Casablanca and artists such as Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland - who were at the start of the 'Crooner' era in the mid 1940s - while Jazz artists like Dizzy Gillespie and Thelonious Monk helped introduce bebop style Jazz. Sports stars such as Heavyweight boxer Joe Louis and baseball legend Joe DiMaggio were among many stars and artists that left their careers temporarily to serve in the war. After WWII finally came to an end, the African-American community had a turn in their favor when Jackie Robinson was drafted onto the Dodgers team, making him the first African-American to play on a major league sports team. The entertainment and sports industry at this time was a way for people to connect amid tumultuous events and find a common ground to stand on once again.
