Jimi Hendrix 50th Anniversary of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED
Fifty years ago, Jimi Hendrix and photographer/designer Karl Ferris were cooking up a mix of psychedelic music and imagery. The Jimi Hendrix Experience debut studio album ARE YOU EXPERIENCED, released August 23, 1967, features the artwork of photographer/designer Karl Ferris on both front and back. Ferris' Jimi Hendrix photography and designs are included on Hendrix's ELECTRIC LADYLAND double cover and is the Jimi Hendrix photo used on the AXIS BOLD AS LOVE album - all released in 1967-68 during Hendrix's all too short rise to fame.
Hendrix recognized Ferris' experimental use of infrared film and fisheye lens to create color extremes and psychedelic imagery, a style Hendrix wanted for his albums.
In 1967, ARE YOU EXPERIENCED became an immediate critical and commercial success with legendary, mind-bending songs including "Purple Haze," "Manic Depression," "Foxey Lady" and more, brilliant, rebellious, passionate - compositions that will continue to rock the worlds of generations to come.
INSIGHTS INTO HENDRIX'S INTENTION ON THIS ALBUM - A "?" IN THE ALBUM TITLE
Hendrix originally wrote the title ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? ending with a question mark. Hendrix said that the title was meant as a question and an invitation to become experienced through hearing his music. However, the printer missed this and left out the question mark, and the rest is rock music history.
