We're pleased to offer this exclusive box set of photographs from John Coltrane's iconic 1957 'Blue Train' album session, from the Francis Wolff estate. Included are eight 8x10" photographs, shot at Rudy Van Gelder's studio in Hackensack, NJ. Each portfolio contains eight 8x10" archival digital prints, which are estate stamped and numbered in a limited edition of 25 sets. Each set of photographs is packaged in a beautiful handmade, fabric bound, archival presentation folio, and comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.


"Sometime in late 1956 or early 1957, John Coltrane visited Blue Note Records to pick up some Sidney Bechet albums. Alfred Lion was alone in the office and asked Coltrane if he'd like to make an album. Coltrane agreed and took an advance check. Alfred told him to come back to meet Francis Wolff and to draw up a contract.

Months later, Coltrane ended up signing with Prestige Records, but he felt he had to honor his promise to Alfred and so on September 15, 1957, he made his one and only album for Blue Note. Not coincidentally, Blue Train was his first bonafide masterpiece.

Blue Note's system of planning meetings and rehearsals was at the core of the extraordinary quality of their albums. Francis Wolff's photography and Reid Miles's bold graphics brought each album to life visually. All of this suited Coltrane's vision perfectly. He came to Rudy Van Gelder's studio, which was situated in the living room of his parent's house in Hackensack, New Jersey, fully rehearsed with one standard and four great originals, all of which became jazz standards.
