Valerie Jodoin Keaton
Valerie Jodoin Keaton is a Canadian-American photographer and musician. From 2003 to 2007, she toured the world while a member of indie rock band The Dears. She later founded indie rock band For Those About To Love with ex-Dears members. Among other photo projects, Valerie Jodoin Keaton did an extensive photo documentary on rock musicians backstage right before and after their performances. She seeked to represent the emotional experience lived during these crucial moments, which she was so familiar with. Using her 500 C/M Hasselblad camera, she was able to create a composition that gave her subject's environment equal importance, thus underlining the intimate relationship between the musicians and the backstage area. This intimacy is further expressed by the stillness of the poses, which the musicians gave her purposefully. To avoid disturbing the artists, she rarely took more than three shots. As a result, the portraits combine elements of grace, fragility, truthfulness and beauty. This project, entitled ''Backstage", was published in Canada in 2009. It contains photographs of rock musicians, including Paul McCartney, Beck, and Jack White. Valerie Jodoin Keaton is part of the American exhibition ''Who Shot Rock and Roll: A Photographic History from 1955-Present'', presented in various museums across the U.S.
