Eric B. and Rakim, Brixton Academy, London, November, 1987
From Richard Bellia: A few things about this photo. It was taken in a taxi on the way to Heathrow airport. I was with a journalist from British weekly Melody Maker David Stubbs. The duo was due in Amsterdam and was very late. We did both interview and shoot during the trip. This is what Stubbs wrote about it on Facebook:
“Haha, Richard Bellia just shared this photo of Eric B & Rakim in the back of a black cab from 1987. I was in there too; you can just see my briefcase in the lower left hand corner. Yes, I took a briefcase to interviews; yes, I was the original Briefcase Wanker. We'd been supposed to do the piece at the hotel but things got delayed as they did in those days and we ended up having to do interview and photos in the back of a cab en route to Heathrow, as they were due to fly to Amsterdam. From the way Eric B had his feet up comfortably on the seat opposite in the cab it was clear that they weren't expecting Richard and I to be joining them.
Still, I got an interview of sorts; there they are, gassing away. They were two of the coolest people on the planet at this point, it must be said, at a time when hip-hop still felt marginal and cultish and the idea of it going global was as improbable as grebo developing into a worldwide phenomenon. Shortly afterwards, I lost my briefcase.”
